Reliance Jio Urges Government to Frame Policy to Shut Down 2G and 3G Services
Reliance Jio, in response to a consulting paper published by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), titled Digital Transformation through 5G Ecosystem, suggested that the government should frame a policy to shut down the 2G and 3G networks in India and move the existing users to 4G and 5G networks. In a separate response, Vodafone Idea (Vi) also made the same suggestion and highlighted that the existence of such barriers lead to a digital divide and impacts the ecosystem for 5G use cases.
The regulatory body sought opinions on the barriers to the development of the ecosystem for 5G use cases, which need to be addressed and the possible policy and regulatory interventions that can overcome them. Responding to this, Reliance Jio stated, “The Government should come out with a policy and glidepath for closing down the 2G and 3G networks completely so that unnecessary network costs should be avoided, and all customers can be migrated to 4G and 5G services.” The telecom operator added that this will also boost the developing ecosystem to 5G use cases.
Separately, Vodafone Idea also submitted its suggestion highlighting a similar measure. “The inability of users to switch to smartphones on account of the cost of these devices also leads to the users continuing on older technology and hence, not using digital services and most likely ending up being not updated on latest digital technologies and services,” it added.
The two major issues with shifting users to a higher network bandwidth include the abundance of phones used in India that are only 2G/3G capable, and the pricing of the 4G and 5G enabled smartphones that might be unaffordable for the rural and remote population of the country. Vodafone Idea highlighted the issue as well and stated that the cost of smartphones for low-income groups is a very big challenge.
Reliance Jio also underlined the necessity for the availability and allocation of a “massive amount” of spectrum bands to better implement a robust 5G connectivity. To solve this, the telecom operator urged that the 6GHz band, full C-Band, and 28GHz (on a flexible use basis) should also be auctioned, along with the planned auction of the E-Band and V-Band spectrum.
It should be noted that these are just the suggestions given to TRAI by Telecom Service Providers and other enablers of the ecosystem. The suggestion does not ensure that the government will take active steps to shut down the 2G and 3G networks. In case, the Centre does move ahead with the proposed suggestion, citizens will get an ample amount of time and assistance from the government to make the transition easy.

Xiaomi 15 Series Tipped to Run on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC
Xiaomi 14 series with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC and HyperOS operating system was launched in Chinese markets in October last year. They are yet to make their India debut, but ahead of it, rumours about the next-generation flagship smartphones from Xiaomi have already started surfacing online. The Xiaomi 15 series is tipped to be powered by next-generation Qualcomm flagship processor. The Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Pro are said to go official in September.
Tipster Smart Pikachu (translated from Chinese) on Weibo claimed that the Xiaomi 15 series will be equipped with Qualcomm's unannounced Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC. The displays of the purported devices are said to offer a 1.5K resolution. The Xiaomi 14 series was the first handset to feature Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC.
Previous leaks suggested that mass production of the Xiaomi 15 lineup will kick off in September. The regular model is expected to retain a flat display and have the same screen size as the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 13. The Xiaomi 15 Pro is rumoured to come with a slightly curved 2K display with 0.6 mm narrow bezels. Since there's no official announcement from Xiaomi about the 15 series yet, these details should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Xiaomi's 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro were launched in China in October. The price of Xiaomi 14 Pro starts at CNY 4,999 (roughly Rs. 56,500) for the 12GB + 256GB RAM and storage model whereas the Xiaomi 14 is priced at CNY 3,999 (roughly Rs. 50,000) for the 8GB + 256GB RAM and storage variant. There is no official word yet on their debut in markets outside China.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC powers Xiaomi's 14 series. They run on Xiaomi's HyperOS interface and feature up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. They also have an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. The Xiaomi 14 series has LTPO OLED displays with up to 2K resolution and 120Hz dynamic refresh rate. They have a Leica-tuned triple rear camera setup as well.

Ola Electric Founder's AI Startup Krutrim Becomes India's First AI Unicorn
Krutrim, the AI startup founded by serial entrepreneur Bhavish Aggarwal, has gained unicorn status after securing $50 million in funding from investors including Matrix Partners India. It becomes the first Indian AI startup to gain a billion-dollar valuation, a mere month after debuting a large language model, the firm said in a blog post. Krutrim, which translates to “artificial” in Sanskrit, is also developing data centers and will ultimately aim to create servers and super computers for the AI ecosystem.
A clutch of Indian startups and academic groups are racing to build large language models in Indian languages, so called Indic LLMs, after the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT more than a year ago. Countries are hoping to create their own competing AI systems, rather than relying on technology from the US or China. In Europe, investors are pouring cash into France's Mistral AI, valued at $2 billion after being founded last year. The United Arab Emirates touts its Falcon model, which is backed by an Abu Dhabi government research institute.
India, with 1.4 billion people, is focusing on building smaller, more cost efficient AI systems. Generative AI startup Sarvam, which built its system using available open-source models, launched OpenHathi, its first open-source Hindi LLM last month. The announcement came days after it had raised $41 million in an investment from Lightspeed Venture Partners, billionaire Vinod Khosla and others.
“India has to build its own AI,” Aggarwal, the founder of Indian ride-hailing startup Ola, said in the statement. “We are fully committed towards building the country's first complete AI computing stack.”

The iPhone maker's 'spatial computer features two Micro-OLED panels that offer a total of 23 million pixels and up to 100Hz refresh rate. It is powered by Apple's M2 processor and a new R1 chip that processes data from the headset's various sensors. The headset also features iris-based biometric authentication and offers up to two hours of battery life, according to Apple.
Apple Vision Pro price, availability
Pricing for the Apple Vision Pro starts at $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2.9 lakh) for the base model with 256GB of storage. You can also purchase the headset in 512GB and 1TB storage options that are priced at $3,699 (roughly Rs. 3.07 lakh) and $3,899 (roughly Rs. 3.24 lakh), respectively. The company will begin selling the headset via Apple Stores in the US starting on February 2.
If you wear prescription or reading spectacles, you can also buy Zeiss optical inserts — the Readers inserts cost $99 (roughly Rs. 8,200), while the Prescription inserts cost $149 (roughly Rs. 12,400).
You can also purchase AppleCare+ for the Vision Pro that costs $499 (roughly Rs. 41,500) and covers accidental damage repairs with a $299 (roughly Rs. 24,900) service fee. The company's website says that repairs without AppleCare+ could cost as much as $2,399 (roughly Rs. 2 lakh).
Apple Vision Pro specifications
The first spatial computer from Apple is powered by an M2 chip paired with a second R1 chip — that is based on the same M-series processor — to handle data from the Vision Pro's many sensors with a 12ms response time and 256GB/s bandwidth. The device has dual Micro-OLED displays with 92 percent coverage of the DCI:P3 colour gamut and can display 23 million pixels. It also supports 90Hz, 96Hz, and 100Hz refresh rates.

The device has six microphones, two primary cameras, six secondary (tracking) cameras, four cameras for eye tracking, a LiDAR scanner, a TrueDepth camera, along with six other sensors.
The Vision Pro is powered by an external battery pack that is connected via a cable. Apple doesn't typically reveal the capacities of its batteries, so we'll have to wait for a teardown video to find out these details. The battery is claimed to power the headset for up to two hours, and the device actually ships with a charger in the box, unlike many other Apple products, including the iPhone. Depending on your configuration, the Vision Pro can weigh up to 650g and the battery pack weighs 353g, according to the company.

Circle to Search Is Google’s New Way to Get More Information Right Where You Are
Google has announced two major updates to its Search - Circle to Search and multisearch experience. The first of these new Search features will let Android users search for anything on their devices without switching apps. The feature touted as born out of recognising curiosity is called Circle to Search.
Google has introduced the Circle to Search feature to make contextual search easier. Often, we search for something specific and end up getting distracted from what we are doing. With this new feature, Google aims to solve this problem by bringing search results to users without having them leave the app they were originally using.
Google's new feature enables users to look for context about any image or item on their screen with a simple gesture using the search power of the Cupertino giant. The best is that once Circle to Search loads, with gestures such as circling, highlighting, scribbling, or tapping, you can get the information you are interested in and then go back to what you were doing without switching apps. The feature brings more contextual information at your fingertips.
The company stresses that the new feature doesn't feel disruptive, stops what you're doing, and offers whatever detail. In a limited briefing, Google showcased different use cases, some of which were relatable to our day-to-day lives. Like watching a video about fashion and circling the shoes will offer you similar shoppable options from retailers across the web.
The Circle to Search feature will be available starting January 31, 2024, on select premium Android smartphones, including the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and the new Galaxy S24 series. The feature will be available in all languages and locations where they're available.
Notably, the new Search feature will work on videos, too. This means that while you're watching a YouTube Short, for instance, you can pause it to look for a cap that your favourite actor was wearing. Once you have the details, you can resume watching the video.
How to use the Circle to Search feature
Users can long-press the home button or navigation bar to activate Circle to Search on an Android smartphone. Once activated, users can select any item they see by circling it to find more details or similar products available for purchase from retailers across the web without leaving the current screen or app. Users can simply swipe away to return to their original screen or app when finished.
Multisearch + Gen AI
Apart from Circle to Search, Google also announced an AI-powered multisearch experience. Building on the recent string of generative AI breakthroughs, Google's multisearch experience tries to make exploring easier. Starting today, on queries not limited to text but also clicked images or screenshots, the multi-search experience will show results with AI-powered insights.
How does it work? Take a picture of an object you can't recognise and add your question, "What's this?" Google's new feature will get an AI-powered overview with more relevant information from across the web.
The new multisearch feature is launching this week in English in the US for all, and it doesn't require any enrollment in Search Labs.
How to use the new multisearch experience: Launch Lens via the Google app for Android or iOS and get started for a multisearch experience (US only). Users outside the US have to opt for Search Generative Experience (SGE) in Search Labs and can then preview this feature in the Google app.

Mercedes-Benz Boasts of In-Car NFT Gallery as Part of MB.OS Revamp
Mercedes, the German luxury carmaker has decided to express its stance on the controversial Web3 sector, in a rather bold and artistic way. In a revamp to its operating system, Mercedes-Benz has decided to include a digital gallery, showing off non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Built on blockchains, NFTs are digital collectibles that hold underlaying values, which makes them a lucrative investment item for members of the Web3 community. NFTs could be inspired by artworks, cartoons, game characters, or even imaginary elements.
During its recent presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the German automaker showcased its next-generation Mercedez-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) that brings changes to its in-car entertainment provisions, Decrypt reported.
As part of these tweaks to its OS, the dashboard of Mercedes-Benz now features a new app called ‘MBUX Collectibles'. Through this app, users of these cars will be able to browse through NFTs linked to the brand. Last year, the car company had dropped its second NXT Icons NFT collection. The 18,860 digital that are collectibles part of this collection, for instance, will be shown as part of the car's NFT gallery.
1/ We are excited to announce our next core collection, Mercedes-Benz NXT Icons, which takes you on a journey through @MercedesBenz's design heritage and features icons from both the past and present. Find out more about this collection in this thread. ↓ pic.twitter.com/6EauPdTBEi
— Mercedes-Benz NXT (@MercedesBenzNXT) August 22, 2023
The first ever NFT collection from Mercedes-Benz debuted in April last year, and it was named ‘Maschine'. NFTs from this series will also be featured in the revamped dashboard. Hoping to connect with a younger generation of customers, the German luxury car brand has been trying to establish itself as a pro-Web3 brand for a while now.
Apart from NFTs, Mercedes-Benz had inked a sponsorship deal with the FTX crypto exchange in September 2021. The partnership automatically fell apart after the FTX exchange collapsed last year and ended up filing for bankruptcy. Google Faces $7 Billion US Patent Infringement Trial Over AI Technology
Alphabet's Google is set to go before a federal jury in Boston on Tuesday in a trial over accusations that processors it uses to power artificial intelligence technology in key products infringe a computer scientist's patents.
Singular Computing, founded by Massachusetts-based computer scientist Joseph Bates, claims Google copied his technology and used it to support AI features in Google Search, Gmail, Google Translate and other Google services.
A Google court filing said that Singular has requested up to $7 billion (roughly Rs. 58,172 crore) in monetary damages, which would be more than double the largest-ever patent infringement award in US history.
Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda called Singular's patents "dubious" and said that Google developed its processors "independently over many years."
"We look forward to setting the record straight in court," Castaneda said.
An attorney for Singular declined to comment on the case.
The trial is expected to last two to three weeks.
Singular's 2019 complaint said Bates shared his computer-processing innovations with Google between 2010 and 2014. Singular said Google's Tensor Processing Units, which enhance the tech giant's AI capabilities, copy Bates' technology and infringe two patents.
The lawsuit said that Google's circuits use an improved architecture Bates discovered that allows for greater processing power and has "revolutionized the way AI training and inference are accomplished."
Google introduced its processing units in 2016 to power AI used for speech recognition, content generation, ad recommendation and other functions. Singular said that versions 2 and 3 of the units, introduced in 2017 and 2018, violate its patent rights.
Google told the court in December that its processors work in different ways than Singular's patented technology and that the patents are invalid.
"Google engineers had mixed feelings about the technology and the company ultimately rejected it, explicitly telling Dr. Bates that his idea was not right for the type of applications Google was developing," Google said in a court filing.
A US appeals court in Washington also will hear arguments on Tuesday about whether to invalidate Singular's patents in a separate case that Google appealed from the US Patent and Trademark Office.
