Sam Altman-Backed Humane AI Pin Is Both Interesting and Futuristic, but It Won’t Replace Your Phone
Ever since the Humane AI Pin was first announced, people have been curious whether it could replace smartphones someday. The device was also mentioned in Time's "Best Inventions of 2023", and finally, we spent some time with it in the hands-on zone of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. While we didn't use it independently, an extended demo where company representatives talked about all the features and demoed most of them gave us a sneak peek into the future of mobile devices, but at the same, it also felt that the AI Pin isn't ready to replace your smartphone just yet.
The square-shaped screen-less device has been designed by ex-Apple employees, and it is currently available for pre-order in the US for $699 (roughly Rs. 60,000). It is like a full-blown device minus a screen and is attached to the user's chest with the help of a magnet. You can interact with the device with the help of hand gestures, and the best is it has a projector that can beam display for the menu and more on your hands using the company's Laser Ink Display. The demo looked fantastic, with the Humane employee showcasing various use cases, such as asking about a particular city and weather conditions. The AI Pin can pick up gestures mid-air, which makes it great for practical use.
Another thing that we liked is the fact that it supports E-SIM, which makes it a standalone device. There are multiple ways the AI Pin comes into use, be it for checking information about something or typing texts. The Humane AI Pin can also pair with your smart speakers and play music via Tidal. During the demo, one of the Humane employees showed us various features and added that AI Pin can translate about 50 languages, which is fantastic.
The small square-shaped device can hear and respond to the user through small speakers. The company currently claims up to five hours of battery life. However, the backup can be enhanced with a battery booster accessory.
The attention to detail is very apparent like the presence of a Single RGB LED light on the device while it is attached to the chest, which lights up to show when the device is functional. If you loved playing with the laser during childhood, your love is back. The voice is the main play here as there's no touchscreen to interact with - also a central theme of the Humane AI Pin.
Apart from voice, users can also interact using the touchpad on the front side. As the name suggests, AI backs the entire package and keeps you on top of everything - from your email to text messages to reminders and more.
In about an hour that we spent looking at different demos shown by Humane employees at the MWC booth of Qualcomm and asking multiple questions related to AI Pin, there were a few observations that we believe are applicable in real-world usage. For, the display on your palm is easy to read, tilting and rolling your hand to interact with the display is easy to understand, close your fingers to make a selection is again an easy gesture to interact with; the interpreter is loud, considering we were in a large hall and there was ambient noise around. The AI Pin also has a camera that captures a photo by double-tapping the touchpad with two fingers.
Now we reach the million-dollar question: can Humane AI Pin replace smartphones? No. Imran Chaudhri, President and Chairman of Humane, stressed during a short conversation with Gadgets 360 that it is more of a companion device than one that is designed to replace your smartphone. What AI Pin can do is minimise your interaction with your smartphone because you can get so much done with the small square-shaped screenless device with just your voice.
Sam Altman-backed Humane has already revealed its intention to bring the AI Pin to India, as confirmed to Moneycontrol. This will be an interesting move because Humane, as per Chaudhari, has received an "overwhelming number of inquiries" from India. While the talks are in the initial phase, seeing how the AI Pin performs when it starts shipping in March 2024 will be interesting.

Crypto Firm, Industry Group Sue US SEC for 'Overreach' on Digital Assets
A Texas cryptocurrency company and an industry group sued the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday, saying the regulator has overstepped its authority and asking a judge to rule that digital assets traded on exchanges are not securities.
Fort Worth-based crypto company Lejilex and lobbying group Crypto Freedom Alliance of Texas (CFAT) claim the SEC has asserted jurisdiction over the industry without a "clear statutory mandate."
Lejilex says it seeks to run a cryptocurrency platform called Legit.Exchange. The company formed last year said it plans to list digital assets including those the SEC has deemed securities in lawsuits against Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S., and Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange.
Lejilex wants the court to rule that listing pre-existing tokens will not violate securities laws.
"We wish we were launching our business instead of filing a lawsuit, but here we are," Lejilex co-founder Mike Wawszczak said in a statement.
A spokesperson for the SEC did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
Both Coinbase and Binance have denied the SEC's allegations.
CFAT asked the court to block the SEC from suing its members, and said the agency's assertion of jurisdiction over digital assets has made it harder to convince Texas lawmakers to embrace "sensible policies."
The group launched last year and counts Coinbase and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz's a16z crypto fund as members.
CFAT and Lejilex argue the SEC is wrong to classify digital assets as "investment contracts" because they create no ongoing commitment between creator and purchaser.
They also asked the court to apply the "major questions" doctrine, which lets judges invalidate executive agency actions of "vast economic and political significance" unless Congress clearly authorized them.
The once-rare doctrine has gained traction among regulatory opponents, as the conservative-leaning U.S. Supreme Court has applied it in a couple of recent cases.
Crypto companies fighting SEC enforcement actions, including Coinbase and Binance, have made the same arguments in the other cases, so far without success.
A judge in July rejected the argument that an ongoing commitment is required to make an asset a security in the SEC's case against Ripple Labs. Another judge overseeing the regulator's lawsuit against Terraform Labs found the "major questions" doctrine does not apply to the cryptocurrency industry. Both of those cases were brought in New York.
The new lawsuit filed in federal court in Fort Worth brings the industry's fight with the regulator under the jurisdiction of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. More than two thirds of the judges on the appeals court were appointed by Republican presidents, making it the favored venue for challenges to the SEC under the Biden administration.
The case was assigned to Judge Reed O'Connor, an appointee of Republican former President George W. Bush with a track record of ruling in favor of conservative litigants challenging laws and regulations governing guns, LGBTQ rights and healthcare.
Paul Clement, former U.S. Solicitor General under President George W. Bush, represents the plaintiffs.

Google’s Duet AI Features Testing on Gmail, Docs and Drive Expands to More Users: Report
Google has reportedly expanded testing for its Duet AI artificial intelligence (AI)-powered real-time collaborator for Google's online services including Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Sheets, and Google Slides. Duet AI was first unveiled by the tech giant during the Google I/O 2023, and since then it has been in a closed testing phase. Before it is launched across the company's online services, Google is testing the feature with users who have enrolled in the Workspace Labs program.
According to a 9to5Google report, Duet AI's side panel has begun appearing for several users enrolled in the Workspace Labs program. Opening the online apps resulted in a welcome screen that explained that these early and experimental features are now available to them. Beta testers get experimental features for a temporary period, and it is expected that once the testing is done, Duet AI will become available as part of the Google One AI Premium plan for personal Google account holders. Duet AI can undertake specific tasks in online apps. The side panel can be expanded to half the screen in all the apps except Gmail, as per the report.
Google announced a detailed overview of the features in a blog post last year. In Gmail, Duet AI can summarise email threads, explain conversations in a simplified language, suggest, write, and improve replies, and even find information from other emails. Users can ask the AI questions such as “When is my next flight” and it will scan through the emails to find the booking details and will give a concise answer.
Similarly, in Google Drive, the Duet AI side panel can be used to track files, summarise project folders, create bullet points from large documents, and even answer queries involving data from the files in the Drive and emails in Gmail. Coming to Google Docs, Duet AI can showcase its full range of generative capabilities as it can brainstorm ideas, write content from scratch, add to pre-written content, create tables, generate images, and more. Google claims that Duet AI can understand contextual speech and can collaborate with the user to improve efficiency.
In Google Sheets, using the “help me organise” capability, the AI assistant can create custom plans for tasks, projects, or activities. This includes creating tables, and formulas, adding filters, and even performing goals-based tasks from scratch. In Google Slides, Duet AI can generate slides as per specifications, add elements and images, write words, summarise presentations, add slide animation, and even create customised presentation layouts. While the report does not mention it, Duet AI was also planned for Google Meet where it could generate unique backgrounds. These features are expected to make their way to subscribers when Duet AI exits beta testing in the future.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra Price, Front Panel Design Leaked; Tipped to Get MIIT Certification
Xiaomi 14 Ultra may be unveiled on February 25 during the global launch of the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro. The purported top-of-the-line handset has surfaced online multiple times over the past few weeks. The company has not yet confirmed the model but several leaks and reports have suggested details about the phone. Some key specifications of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra have been tipped previously. Leaked design renders of the model have also shown the back panel design. Now the front panel design of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and the price of the handset have leaked. It was also reportedly spotted on a certification site.
A MySmartPrice report shared leaked renders of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, which showed the front panel of the handset. It appears with a flat display with very slight curves near the edges and very slim bezels and chin. The report claimed that the phone may come with a 2.5D quad micro curved screen. It also is seen with a centred hole-punch slot at the top to house the front camera. An earlier report from the same publisher leaked the rear panel renders of the handset previously.
Another report by Dealabs (via 9to5Google) suggested that the Xiaomi 14 Ultra may be priced at EUR 1,499 (roughly Rs. 1,33,600) for its 16GB + 512GB RAM and storage option. Although this report claims that the model will be available in a single configuration, it was previously tipped to come in 12GB + 256GB, 16GB + 512GB, and 16GB + 1TB variants.
A Xiaomi handset with the model number 24031PN0DC has also been spotted on China's MIIT certification site and tipster Digital Chat Station has claimed that this is the purported Xiaomi 14 Ultra model. The phone is said to support 5G and satellite connectivity, although it is still unclear if it supports two-way calling or allows only satellite messaging.
Previous leaks have also suggested that the Xiaomi 14 Ultra could get a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC and ship with Android 14-based HyperOS. It may also sport a 6.7-inch 2K AMOLED display, a 50-megapixel quad rear camera unit and a 5,180mAh battery with 90W wired and 50W wireless charging support.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series Update Fixes Display Issue, Adds Camera and AI Upgrades
Samsung has announced that it is rolling out a new update for its Galaxy S24 series smartphones. The update is considered to be a major one as it addresses several user complaints seen ever since the phones hit the market. Most prominent among them was a display issue which appeared washed out in vivid mode compared to last year's models. The South Korean tech giant has now fixed it with a new Vividness setting that allows better control of the colour depth in the display mode. The update also adds improvements to camera modes and the performance of artificial intelligence (AI).
Earlier, as per a report by Teknofilo, the company had said that the changes made to the vivid mode were intentional and aimed to “provide more accurate and comfortable viewing during use”. However, it appears the tech giant has now decided to roll back its decision and allow users better control over display settings. Revealing the update via a newsroom announcement on Wednesday, Samsung acknowledged that different users have varying needs, and said, “Based on your feedback, through an upcoming update, we aim to provide enhanced options and experiences across device display and camera.”
The update will add a new Vividness option that can be found in Display > Advanced settings. This option adds a bar that will let users have improved control over the intensity of the colour depth by sliding it left and right until the right amount of vibrancy is displayed. The setting has three different levels. At zero, the vivid mode remains in its current state, while pushing it will enhance the vividness to a level seen in previous year's models.
Apart from this, Samsung has also improved the camera system on the Galaxy S24 series devices. As per the note, improvements have been made to various camera modes including zoom, Portrait Mode, Nightography, videos shot through rear cameras, and more. These upgrades should improve the picture quality even further.
Finally, the update has also improved the Galaxy AI features on the S24 series smartphones. Samsung hinted at improvements made to the AI model, without specifying what they really are. However, it appears to be a technical upgrade that allows the AI to better understand contextual speech in different languages for the Live Translate feature. As per the announcement, the update will be rolled out to all users in the coming days.
